Maybe this book needed a more memorable title. I’m an art freak when it comes to this time period, but I avoided this book for a while, thinking it would be too academic. It was anything but. The scholarship was fantastic, and it took me straight into the early 20th century art world in England. I’ve read a lot about Gwen John, Gwen Smith, and Ida Nettleship — but I learned more here. The centerpiece of the book is the amazing Edna Clarke Hall. This book deserves to be in every collection focused on 20th century British art!
